Who would have thought the year of 2020 our world as we once knew it basically stopped? Living a fast pace life of running kids to sports, family vacations, concerts, dinner with friends, and people not being able to go to work is now gone. Not forever, but for now. How do we adjust to this new social distancing? How do live in our homes with very little or no human physical contact? How do we keep our minds motivated to keep our bodies healthy?
5 years ago, I was living at 300 plus pounds, depressed, unmotivated, with no desire to change. Until a health scare, (for full story please listen to Low Carb, High Life on Anchor). I was told by my doctor I was pre-diabetic, with all my blood work coming back not healthy. High blood pressure and high cholesterol was among the many other things she was concerned about. She gave me 3 months to show change or I would be taking a lot of different meds. I changed my eating habits and found love in group fitness exercises at my gym.
The gym keeps me motivated, grounded, sane, I work on my mind, pushing limits to be as strong as I can be. Group fitness saved my life. My weekly classes I attend, the comradery of my support groups always being there for me. The after-work out sauna time to clear my mind and listen to my favorite music, is now closed and who knows for how long.
WHAT DO WE DO?
What if I told you there are a ton of workout apps, programs online from stretching, high intensity cardio and core classes available to you that are very affordable or even free. There are even live exercise classes!
It does not matter, if you are the person who has never workout, a gym rat, or have disease such as a Thyroid disorder. The thing we need to remember is our bodies may be different in ways, but we need to make the necessary modification to keep our bodies moving. To keep our bodies functioning properly we need to care for them, we need to move more. When we stop exercising our brains and our bodies, our endorphins deplete, you know the famous quote from our one and only Legally Blonde, Elle Woods, “Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins, makes you happy” by exercising and creating these natural endorphins, you will find yourself less tired, full of energy and happy.
First let’s start with your mind. Strong minds make strong bodies. Turn off the news, Netflix or whatever you may be binge watching and try to read a self-help motivational book, there are a ton of available books on the kindle app.
I love podcasts. The list is and endless list of genres from cooking, workouts, social motivation, fashion even comedy shows, and I think that some comedy added to our new way of living is a must.
Now that we are motivated and inspired let’s find that perfect workout for you. The only way you will find out what works for you, is try, try and try again. We have the time now. Facebook is a great way to find live online classes, I love keeping it real, real people, real workouts. It’s fun and motivating to have that instructor yelling through your tv or phone.
Fitness Apps are another great tool to find and search for workouts. Among of a few hundred men and women who love my new workout Drum-Late`, a mash up between Pilates, cardio punching, interval drills, choreographed into an aerobic dance routine, just add sticks and slam away. A great way to release stress after cleaning and home schooling all day. You can find Drum-Late` on The TriadXP.com and on www.drum-late.com with online virtual workouts.
You-tube has a never-ending supply of workouts, from dance aerobics to bootcamps. Take advantage of free demos and intros of workouts and keep trying to you find the ones that you CANNOT live without. Then make that investment into purchasing the workout that is best for you.
Don’t forget we are getting into spring, get outside, take your laptop outside and create your own little Zen to do your workouts. Get some vitamin D, but continue to obey the CDC rules and limit yourself to large groups of people. Include your family, it is fun and its great bonding. We need to keep our kids healthy as well as ourselves.
There are a few more things that will keep our bodies in tip top shape and that is the food we put into our bodies and how much. How are we keeping ourselves from mindless eating? There are amazing food apps out there to track your food, calories in, calories out are how you maintain or lose the weight you are determined to drop. Keep eating veggies, lean meats and low sugar fruits and stay hydrated. To curve your appetite try drinking extra lemon water, adding a shot of mother of raw vinegar to your water, black coffee with a dash of cayenne pepper or hot green tea. There is no magic pill. When you have patience and discipline your results will start to show and you will feel amazing, and before you know it, this pandemic will be over and we will have all learned how strong we really are.
Do not give up! Support each other, be safe , and support your local businesses.
